Watermelon, blueberries, and whipped cream make this festive fruity snack, appetizer, or dessert perfect for 4th of July, Flag Day, or any warm summer day. This updated version of whipped cream is made with both whipping cream and greek yogurt.

Like I said the other day, I made them celebrate 4th of July a little early so I could test recipes & take pics. I sent out my proposed menu for the weekend and then everyone else obligingly made plans for the other meals.
My cousin Catherine planned on doing a fruit flag as a fun little snack to have on the wharf. I’d seen it on Pinterest a few times, but I forgot about it. I was so excited when she told me that she was planning on doing it, so I helped her chop the watermelon. Also, I already made some Greek yogurt whipped cream which we decided would be perfect for the white stripes in our Fruit Flag.
How to make a Fruit Flag
Basically, you just find a large rectangular platter and arrange the blueberries in a small square in the top left corner then make a few rows of watermelon or strawberries and fill the space in between the rows with greek yogurt whipped cream.
If you want to be fancy, you can fill a zip-top bag with some whipped cream and cut a little whole in the corner. Then squeeze out little dots over the blueberries for the stars in your “flag”
And voila! you have an adorable, easy, and festive 4th of July snack/appetizer/dessert.
Variations and Substitutions
You can use strawberries in place of the watermelon. But I’m pretty sure I consumed over 5 pounds of strawberries in 3 days and suggested we use watermelon to change the “red” up in our red white and blue themed dishes.
Tips for making a Fruit Flag:
You don’t have to make the greek yogurt whipped cream if you don’t want to. Any whipped cream will work; you’ll need about 3 cups.
Six cups of watermelon is about 1/4 large watermelon and about 12 ounces blueberries is 2 cups.
We froze ours (for about 30 minutes), so it would still be cold once we walked it to the end of the wharf since it gets quite hot down here.
You can either serve it right after assembling or stick it in the fridge or freezer before serving. I wouldn’t freeze for longer than 45 minutes though.

For the whipped cream:
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream cold
- 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt cold
- 2 TBSP sugar powdered sugar, maple syrup, or honey
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
For the flag:
- 2 cups blueberries
- 6 cups watermelon chopped, or strawberries
For the whipped cream:
- Chill the mixing bowl and beaters. Add the cold whipping cream to the bowl and whip for about 90 seconds until soft peaks form. Whipped cream should stand up on it’s own. Transfer to a bowl and refrigerate.
- Add the cold yogurt, sugar, and vanilla extract to the mixing bowl, and whip for 60 seconds. Taste and add extra sugar if desired.
- Fold in the whipped cream, trying not to break down the whipped cream. Refrigerate.
For the fruit flag:
- On a large rectangular serving tray, arrange the blueberries in a square shape in the top left corner.
- Make 3 or 4 stripes of watermelon for the red stripes on the flag.
- Spoon the whipped cream evenly in layers between the watermelon.
- Optional: spoon about 1/2 cup whipped cream into a zip top bag. Cut a small piece of a corner or the bag off to make a "piping bag" and put a few dots in the blueberries to make the stars on your flag.
- Serve immediately or refrigerate or freeze before serving. Enjoy!
