Easy homemade hummus with artichoke hearts is delicious, budget friendly, and quick to make
Like most of my brilliant ideas, this turned out incredible. Easy, tasty, and budget friendly.
Usually when I make hummus, I skip the tahini paste because it’s one more ingredient I have to keep in my kitchen and it can be expensive.
However, I decided that the rich flavor of tahini would be a great addition to this hummus. So I started the hummus by processing sesame seeds since tahini is just the product of blending sesame seeds until it forms a butter like substance.
You’ll want to do this first since you need the sesame seeds to completely blend. If you have tahini, just skip this step and use 2 tablespoons of tahini in place of the 1/4 cup sesame seeds.

So you’ll blend your sesame seeds until it turns into a sesame seed butter; then you’ll add your chickpeas, lemon juice, water, olive oil, salt, and cayenne pepper. Process this until it is completely smooth.
It takes a few minutes, and you may need to add more water or lemon juice to make it blend better.
Then you’ll add in your artichoke hearts. I was using a mini food processor, so I removed about one cup of hummus and added the artichoke hearts in. Then I processed the mixture until the artichoke hearts were incorporated, and I added the reserved hummus back into the food processor to mix everything together. If you have a regular food processor, you can skip this step.
Ok so it basically took me longer to tell you what to do than it did to actually make it.
It’s a delicious alternative to your typical hummus that will sure to become your new favorite!
- 1/4 cup sesame seeds
- 1 can chickpeas
- 2 TBSP lemon juice
- 1 TBSP olive oil
- 2 TBSP water
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1 cup artichoke hearts
- Add sesame seeds to the bowl of a food processor. Process until they turn into a butter.
- Add chickpeas, lemon juice, olive oil, water, salt, and cayenne pepper. Process until completely smooth. You may need to add extra water to help blend.
- Add artichoke hearts and process until smooth. Taste and add seasoning if needed. Serve with sliced veggies and/or whole grain crackers
