A fun alternative to your typical “dressed” shrimp po boy without any mayo. Using Sabra Spread Garlic Herb saves you from the unwanted gook in your sandwich. Great to make all at once, so it would be an excellent appetizer or lunch option for a tailgating party.

Right off the bat, I’d like to make a disclaimer that this is not supposed to be an exact replica of a po boy you’d find in New Orleans. It’s not. But that doesn’t mean it’s equally delicious in a whole other way.
Ok, now that we’ve got that outta the way, let’s chat about this sandwich.
When you order a po boy, the question you’ll get is “dressed or nothin’ on it?” Everytime. Without fail. You betta know what dressed is or you’re gonna hold up the line, and no one wants to be that person.
Dressed means lettuce, tomatoes and mayo (sometimes pickles). I like the lettuce & tomatoes but hate mayo. It grosses me out so much.
This is a problem when it comes to ordering po boys because you really only have those two option of dressed or nothing. I end up being that pain in the behind customer that says “wait I want it dressed but no mayo. Just lettuce and tomatoes. Can you make sure there’s no mayo?”
It’s not that I am worried about the extra fat and calories mayo gives my sandwich. I’m not. I just absolutely positively hate mayo on sandwiches. Thankyouverymuch.
To be honest, I rarely ordered a po boy when I lived in New Orleans but when I did, it was always fried shrimp. And it was always undressed. But could they add lettuce and tomatoes pretty please with
mayo on top cherries on top?
However, an undressed sandwich is plain and boring and incredibly dry. You need a sauce or you’re going to have to get at least 3 refills of water with that po boy.
When I found out about Sabra created new sandwich spreads, I jumped on the chance to try them! These things are genius. They’re in a squeeze bottle and not mayo! Something that makes your sandwich not dry and have tons of flavor but it’s not mayo. SO excited!
Before I even started testing recipes with it, I used the squeeze convenient squeeze bottle to add to the base of my tortilla pizzas I make almost daily. They’re a nice change from pizza sauce or ricotta.
Anywho, I decided I’d make a shrimp po boy using the Garlic Herb Sabra Spreads, and it turned out quite tasty! What’s fun about making a po boy is that you can make a lot all at one time. These would be an excellent appetizer or lunch option for a tailgating party.
This is a great alternative to your typical “dressed” shrimp po boy without any mayo saving me from the gross-factor and you from the extra gook you don’t want in your sandwich.
To make these babies, grab a loaf of french bread, slice in half, spread with Sabra Spreads Garlic Herb flavor (or I think the Cracked Black Pepper would be good too!), top with sauteed shrimp, shredded lettuce, and sliced tomatoes. Then cut them into 4-8 slices (depending on sandwich or appetizer size) and call it a (happy) day!
Ok so below are my amounts for ingredients; however, adjust to your liking. The Sabra Spreads are in a convenient little squeeze bottle, so I just made sure I squeezed out enough on each side to get them nicely covered (then I scooped it off to measure and got just about 1/2 cup for the whole sandwich).
Try to find the freshest bake loaf of french bread you can. You want a slightly chewy crust and light and fluffy inside. If it’s more dense than you expected, scoop out some of the bread so you can enough room for toppings.
Shrimp Po Boy
What You'll Need:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1/4 tsp dried oregano
- 1/4 tsp dried thyme
- 1/4 tsp onion powder
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 12 ounces raw shrimp
- 1 loaf fresh french bread 5-6 ounce
- 8 TBSP Sabra Spreads Garlic Herb
- 2 cups shredded lettuce about 1/4 head of iceberg lettuce
How to Make It:
In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat.
Toss the salt, garlic powder, paprika, oregano, thyme, onion powder, cayenne pepper, and black pepper with the shrimp. Stir until shrimp is completely coated.
Cook the seasoned shrimp in one layer in the hot skillet until lightly browned on both sides, about 2-4 minutes per side. Set aside.
Meanwhile, slice the loaf of bread in half horizontally. You want a light bread; if it's dense, scoop out some of the bread to make room for the fillings.
Spread equal amounts of Sabra Spreads Garlic Herb onto each side of bread (about 4 tablespoons per half of loaf). Cover the bottom half of bread with lettuce. Top with cooked shrimp. Layer tomato slices over shrimp. Top with the other slice of bread and cut into 4 sandwiches. Enjoy!
Recipe Notes*Use fresh bread
*You can use leftover cooked & seasoned shrimp. You'll need about 1.5 to 2 cups of shrimp
*If you don't like shrimp, substitute with cooked chicken or turkey
*One loaf of french bread will be about 20 inches
*Slice into 8 slices for appetizer sized portion
